In Philadelphia, the trees bloom in their own time. While they share a window—spring brings cherry blossoms first, then the magnolias burst with pink and white flowers, now the dogwoods are bringing forth their soft pale offerings—each individual tree is on its own timeline, following its own rhythm. I see differences from neighborhood to neighborhood, street to street, even from one house to the next. I appreciate this reminder, this permission, to trust my own pace—especially when it differs from that of those around me, or even my own at any other moment.
I am deep into creating the score for MALACARNE’s* upcoming work: the sky is the same color everywhere or on the rapture of being alive, a five-hour, site-responsive spectacle in Downtown Seattle created by Alice Gosti. The piece premieres Thursday, June 27, 2024 at the 2+U Courtyard (1201 2nd Ave, Seattle, WA) and the company is currently raising funds to support the final phase of this project. If you’re in Seattle, join them next Sunday, April 28th at the Clock Out Lounge.
*Malacarne was a derogatory term assigned to women who did not conform to the Italian fascist ideal of wife, mother, or human. (From the MALACARNE website)
In other news, we’ve arrived at SONIC PRAYER 40. I continue to be astounded by this practice and its exponentially generative properties. Also, I get to use roman numeral XL, which is just satisfying. If you’d like to receive these monthly sonic missions, opt into a paid subscription below.
